Internship: Saltire Scholar and Internship Programme
Offsite Manufacturing Intern for the Developing World
Rory Doak, a graduate of BEng Civil Engineering from Edinburgh Napier University, secured funding from the Centre for Offsite Construction and Innovative Structures (COCIS) and Classrooms for Malawi (CfM), to participate in the Saltire Scholars Internship Programme. In his capacity as ‘Offsite Manufacturing Intern for the Developing World’, Rory spent 19 days in Malawi studying local building techniques. He was able to apply the learning from his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, using research in timber and offsite construction, to develop school buildings for Malawi, for the future creation of the country’s infrastructure.
“It has been fantastic to watch Rory develop both personally and professionally during the Saltire Internship, from overcoming the cultural challenges in Malawi to presenting his findings to industry experts, this internship has tested Rory in many ways and he’s faced them head-on. The aim of the Saltire Foundation is to create the next generation of leaders for Scotland and Rory is certainly fast becoming a confident and ambitious leader who wants to affect real change in the lives of others”.
Sara Nelson, Head of Saltire Scholars Programme at the Saltire Foundation
“The Saltire Scholars Internship Programme has allowed me to work closely with industry pioneers and innovators. Being exposed to such ambitious people at Classrooms for Malawi and the Centre for Offsite Construction and Innovative Structures (COCIS) has benefitted my development as an engineer in a sense that I look at challenges completely differently now, there is no obstacle too great. Now, as an engineer, I just want to be involved in forward thinking, progressive projects where I can make a real difference in the world. Nothing is impossible for me right now, the Saltire internship has empowered me to be ambitious in setting out my goals and work hard to reach them.”
